KUMITE (SPARRING) RULES

The HAITO 3rd KYOKUSHIN KARATE NOVICE KIDS & JUNIORS KUMITE TOURNAMENT, emphasizes discipline, fairness and opportunity for new fighters. The scoring system is adjusted for novice competitors, with a lower threshold for strikes to the legs and body compared to adult competitions (no strikes or straight kicks to the head). Light contact with the head guard is allowed only with a specific kick Mawashi Geri (Round Kick), potentially earning a Wazari (point).

DIVISIONS AND CATEGORIES

To ensure fair and safe matchups, competitors will be organised into divisions based on the following criteria:

  • Eligibility

    • Experience: A minimum of 3 months of martial arts training is required.

    • Belt Rank: The tournament is open to all students up to and including 1st KYU (or equivalent).

  • Division Structure

    • Age Groups: Competitors will be placed into the following age categories: Under 8 (U8), Under 10 (U10), Under 12 (U12), Under 14 (U14), and Under 16 (U16).

    • Gender: Male and female participants will compete in separate divisions.

    • Weight Categories: Within each age and gender category, competitors will be divided into ‘lighter’ and ‘heavier’ groups based on their weigh-in. A ‘middleweight’ group may be added if a division has a particularly large number of entrants.

  • Division Merging Policy

    • We aim for a minimum of three competitors per division. In the event a category has insufficient entries, it may be merged with the next closest and most appropriate division by age and weight to ensure everyone has a chance to compete. The final decision on all division mergers rests with the event organisers.

DURATION OF THE MATCH

Round lengths and the procedure for resolving draws are set according to the competitor’s age category.

Round Durations

  • U8 & U10: 1 minute (60 seconds)

  • U12 & U14: 1.5 minutes (90 seconds)

  • U16: 2 minutes (120 seconds)

Draw Resolution Procedure If a match is tied at the end of the main round, the following steps will be taken to determine a winner:

  1. Extension Round: An additional round of the same duration will be fought.

  2. Weight Decision: If the match is still a draw after the extension round, the competitors’ official weights from the weigh-in are compared. The lighter competitor will be declared the winner, provided there is a weight difference of 5kg or more.

  3. Final Sudden-Death Round: If the weight difference is less than 5kg, a final extension round will be fought. The first competitor to score a point (Wazari or Ippon) will be declared the winner.
