About Kieran Makenji
Kieran shared a bit about his extensive martial arts journey:
“I’ve been training in martial arts for around 18 years. I’ve trained in taekwondo, kickboxing, karate, judo, BJJ, Kudo, and general self-protection skills. I’m reasonably well-versed in Kata bunkai application, but I’m also quite practiced in various types of kumite, striking, and grappling. At my club, I’m the defacto kumite coach.”

As the kumite coach at Zanshin Karate Academy, Kieran has honed his skills in both striking and grappling. His knowledge extends to practical applications of martial arts techniques, which he shared enthusiastically with our senior class.

Kieran is part of several martial arts groups in the UK, focusing on:
- Sharing and promoting quality martial arts
- Building connections within the martial arts community
He is a member of the British Combat Karate Association (BCKA) under the guidance of Iain Abernethy and Peter Consterdine, organizations renowned for their emphasis on practical applications, impact work, and pressure testing.
Senior Class Session: Kyokushin Pinan Sono Kata Applications
During his visit, Kieran led our senior class through an engaging and educational session. We focused on Kyokushin Pinan Sono Kata applications (Bunkai), incorporating takedowns and throws. The session was a fantastic opportunity for our members to:
- Deepen their understanding of Kata applications
- Learn practical takedowns and throws
- Experience high-level kumite techniques
The session was not only informative but also incredibly fun, reflecting Kieran’s passion for martial arts. 😁
